Singer Island New Reef

A new artificial reef is being built just off the beach at Singer Island, Florida. This construction began just north of the 2700 North Ocean Condominium and will be completed in the end of June. Limestone builders are being placed in 6 to 12 feet of water and are visible from the beach in the beautiful ocean water. Squid, mangrove snapper and other fish have started congregating around the boulders. The reef is constructed in different phases, the first phase is estimated at $1.3 million consisting of 9,700 tons of limestone being spread over 11.5 acres. The county plans to expand the artificial reef project to cover a total of 15 acres.

The later phases of the shallow artificial reef will cover impacts from the $30 million breakwater project due to begin later this summer at the north end of Singer Island. This projected is comprised of 11 structures made of limestone and granite that will rise 1 to 3 feet above the surface in about 12 feet of water. The mile long breakwater is stretching from just north of Ocean Reef Park to the south end of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. This will help replenish the north end beaches of Singer Island, and protect them from any further erosion that may occur.
