Locals Perform Well At One-Day Dye Preserve Event

On Wednesday, the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) hosted one of their many one-day golf events at The Dye Preserve Golf Club in Jupiter. The event split the field into six divisions including the gross division, the under 50 age division, the 50-64 age division, the 65 & over age division, and two women’s divisions (long and short distance). Here is a look at how some of the local golfers who participated did.

the dye preserveJason Feng of Palm Beach Gardens won the Gross Division with a five-over 77. He beat fellow Palm Beach Gardens resident Gene Johnson by two shots. Johnson shot a 79 on the day.

John Sorensen won the 50-64 Age Division by one shot over West Palm Beach resident Dann Merrell. Marc Milman of Tequesta and Michael Gabbard of North Palm Beach both shot rounds of 68 to finish third, four shots back.

Dye Preserve is a Pete Dye designed course that plays at just over 7,000 yards from the tips. For more information on The Dye Preserve visit their website at www.thedyepreserve.com.

Rickie Fowler Looking For First Win of the Season

Rickie Fowler has not had the greatest success rate at Congressional Country Club. The Loxahatchee River resident only has one made cut at the Bethesda, Maryland course and that was a 13th place finish at the 2011 AT&T National. He missed the cut when the course hosted the U.S. Open just a few weeks earlier. That was then, this is now.

Since that 13th place finish in 2011, Fowler has become a completely different golfer. He got his maiden win on the PGA Tour at last year’s Wells Fargo Championship. He went on to finish that 2012 season five top 10 finishes, including a win and then a second place finish at The Players Championship the following week. He finished 18th in the final FedEx Cup points standings. It had been his most successful season on tour since he turned pro.

Fast forward to 2013. Fowler already has four top 10 finishes in the first half of the season, one less than he had all last year. He finished 10th in the U.S. Open two weeks ago with his best finish coming at the Arnold Palmer Invitational when he finished in a tie for third. While Fowler has admitted that his consistency at times have been an issue, he is only one top 10 finish away from matching last year’s mark and he still has half a season and the playoffs to go. The only thing missing is a win.

Fowler will return this week to Congressional for only the second time in his career in search of his first win of 2013. A final round 64 at last week’s Travelers Championship is something Fowler will be looking to emulate this week as he will be paired with Jim Furyk and Angel Cabrera for the first two rounds. They will tee off at 7:27am on Thursday and 12:39pm on Friday.

Sam Horsfield wins State Amateur Championship by 11 Strokes

Sam Horsfield had quite an up and down week at the Jupiter Hills Club. An opening round of 72 on the Village course quickly left him six shots off the pace. Horsfield then went out on Friday and shot a three-under 67 on the very difficult Hills course to head into the weekend with a four shot lead. The 16 year old from Davenport never looked back on his way to a four day total of 4-under and an 11 shot victory.

JupiterHillsDespite the large margin of victory, it was still an up and down weekend. Despite a 72 on Saturday, the rest of the field was not able to take advantage and Horsfield actually extended his lead. He fired a 67 on Sunday to comfortably coast to win the 96th State Amateur Championship.

Horsfield has already built up quite the golfing resume. Starting the game at the age of four, Horsfield won the 2011 Boys’ Junior Championship by five shots. He also set a course record at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Trinity a few weeks ago en route to qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Pub Links.

Kevin Jorden of Juno Beach fired a final round 70 to finish in a tie for fourth. The fourth place finish earns him an exemption into this year’s Mid-Amateur Championship and Amateur Match Play Championship and next year’s Florida Open.

The 11 stroke margin of victory was the second largest in a State Amateur event. In 1993, Chris Couch of North Lauderdale won by 14 strokes at Bay Hill in Orlando.

Ernie Els Takes 36 Hole Lead Into Weekend

Ernie Els ended the U.S. Open on a high note. A 69 on Sunday gave him a four round total of 5-over par, good enough for a fourth place finish.

030113_spt_honda_065_982Traveling overseas, the Jupiter resident picked up right where he left off in the first two rounds of this week’s BMW International Open. Els enters the weekend with a one shot lead at the European Tour event being played in Munich after rounds of 63 and 69.

Els got off to a hot start on Thursday. His bogey free round of 63 featured seven birdies, including three in a row on holes 11-13, and an eagle. While Els struggled a little on the front nine Friday that included two birdies and a double bogey, he recovered on the back nine to post a 3-under 69.

Also playing in this week’s European Tour event is Loxahatchee River resident Dustin Johnson. Johnson posted rounds of 66 and 71 and sits five shots behind the leader Els going into the weekend.

Best Backyard Renovations for Summer

With summertime in South Florida upon us, it is the perfect time to take full advantage of your backyard. Your backyard can be the perfect summer spot to entertain friends and family or just kick back and relax and enjoy everything that the area has to offer. Here are some of the best renovations you can do to your backyard for the summer.

__bakcyardlInstall an outdoor kitchen– New technology is making the outdoor kitchen much more affordable. With the outdoor kitchen, you can cook, enjoy your meal, and clean up all while enjoying the South Florida weather instead of being stuck inside. As an added bonus, the outdoor kitchen will give you more flexibility should a time come when you want to renovate your indoor kitchen.

Start at vegetable garden– A great renovation that a lot of people don’t do is to plant a vegetable garden in your back yard. Not only does it add to your yard from an aesthetic stand point, it will also save money on grocery bills since you won’t have to buy as much produce anymore.

Build a new deck– While a deck is usually a project that needs to be contracted out, it can be the perfect place to enjoy a drink and enjoy the weather, or even grill out with family and friends.

Top Storylines From the First Half of the PGA Tour Season

With the conclusion of the U.S. Open, we have now hit the midway point in the PGA Tour season. The first half of the season did not disappoint when it came to storylines. From “drop-gate” to the anchored putter ban, there has been plenty to talk about already this season. Before moving on to this week’s Traveler’s Championship, we take a look back at some of the highlights from the first half of the season.

Brandt Snedeker looks unstoppable, until a rib injury stops him– Brandt Snedeker played the first month of the season about as good as anyone could ask. He had a third, two seconds, and a win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am all in the first month. In his only non top-10 finish of that first month (a tie for 23rd at the Humana Challenge) he still managed to shoot 19-under par. Despite a rib injury sidelining him for a month and causing him to play a limited schedule, he has still recorded a sixth place finish at the Masters, an eighth place finish at The Players Championship, and a 17th place finish at the U.S. Open.

Phil flirts with 59– Phil Mickelson has already had five top-10 finishes this season. One of which was his historic performance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open where he shot a four day score of 28-under par to win. Missing the all-time 72 hole scoring record by just two strokes, Mickelson made 11 birdies in the opening round, including on his first four holes, to shoot a 60. He nearly had a 59 until his birdie putt on 18 lipped out. Chances are he would give up that trophy if it meant turning his runner up at the U.S. Open into a win.

Tiger gets four wins before June– Tiger Woods won four PGA Tour events before the month of May, the fastest to four in a season in his career. The Jupiter Island Resident started with a win at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines and then followed that up with wins at Doral, Bay Hill, and The Players Championship. While Torrey Pines, Doral, and Bay Hill are all courses Tiger has won on many times, the TPC Sawgrass has given Woods fits over the years. It was only his second career win at The Players.

First half of the season full of first time winners– There have been nine first time winners on the PGA Tour in the first half of the season. Russel Henley (Sony Open in Hawaii), John Merrick (Northern Trust Open), Michael Thompson (The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens), Scott Brown (Puerto Rico Open), Kevin Streelman (Tampa Bay Championship), Billy Horschel (Zurich Classic of New Orleans), Derek Ernst (Wells Fargo Championship), Sang-Moon Bay (HP Byron Nelson), and Harris English (St. Jude Classic) all got their first career PGA Tour wins. There have also been two first time major winner to come out of the first two majors of the season. Adam Scott became the first Australian golfer ever to win a green jacket, while Justin Rose became the first golfer from England to win the U.S. Open in 43 years.

Controversy at every turn– The first half of the season has had its fair share of controversy. There was “drop-gate” with Tiger Woods at the Masters that resulted in a two stroke penalty but not a disqualification. There was the announcement from the USGA and R&A banning anchored putting starting in 2016. There was also the issue with Vijay Singh taking Deer Antler Spray and the pending lawsuit between him and the PGA Tour.

With the first half of the PGA Tour season in the books, we now look ahead to the second half of the season where two more majors will be played and someone will be crowned the FedEx Cup champion. If the second half is anything like the first, then we should be in store for a fun race to the finish.
