Jupiter Island Homes For Sale
JUPITER ISLAND – THE EAST COAST HOLLYWOOD
During the early 1920’s Jupiter Island was home to a score of families and a sleepy little resort known as the Island Inn. It was not immune however from the land boom that was underway throughout Florida. Henry Flagler was building huge resort hotels and developing the rough wilderness of the state from St. Augustine to Miami. He extended The Florida East Coast Railway down to the Keys. During this time, The Olympia Improvement Corporation purchased Jupiter Island and had grand plans to create a town, in Greek style, just across the river in Hobe Sound. There they would establish an east coast Hollywood motion picture production center which would rival Hollywood. The thought was that the “stars” and movie moguls would live in splendid houses along the ocean on Jupiter Island and “commute” to work on the mainland. They renamed Hobe Sound “Picture City” and began laying out a grid of streets with Greek names such as Zeus, Saturn, Mercury, Mars, Olympus and Athena. After two years of devastating Florida hurricanes, however, plans were scrapped and the original name restored. The street names remain as do some of the Grecian inspired cement lamp posts that run along Dixie Highway.
